I bought this book because it appeared on a list of recommended reading for grad students leaving the academy. In academia – or, at least in its best image of itself – making any claim that would not be endorsed by an anonymous group of peers is a form of self-sabotage. In most other places, you’re assumed to be selectively exaggerating your accomplishments as close as you can get to the line of outright misrepresentation.So it seemed like this might be a helpful primer, a tutorial in these norms.Not so.The central thesis of the book is sound. But it can be expressed in a few sentences.In short: Know what you have contributed to whatever you can put on a resume or mention while networking or interviewing, and be prepared to articulate this in narrative form (lists are inherently boring).That, however, is the only idea in the book. To write something so short and still so tedious is an accomplishment unto itself.The book is filled mostly with anecdotes about the author coaching others with advice derived from this basic thesis. (Kudos for practicing what you preach?) Unfortunately, the narrative pitches she offers as examples (“brag bites”) are cringe-inducing. The exception – an actual quotation from Scott McNealy (p.184) – proves the rule. It’s not even a particularly brilliant introduction; it simply serves to underscore, in case it was not already obvious, how terribly Klaus writes—and always in the same voice, irrespective of whom she claims to paraphrase.Finally, the author (or her authorial persona) is someone that any sane person, in my judgment, would avoid like the plague. She is the caricature of the generic capitalist subject—the sort of stuff I could not take seriously even when producing such theoretical criticism for an audience of disciples. I just refuse to believe that people, deep down, are like that.For instance, in a representative passage, Klaus castigates a woman for discussing her cupcake recipe at a dinner when she could be bragging about her career accomplishments (pp.140-42). But I came away from the book wanting the omitted details about the recipe (still do!); seated next to Klaus, I’d have excused myself on any pretense and avoided her the rest of the evening. (I mean, how are you be against cupcakes!)Instrumentalizing everyone in your life is basically the opposite – per everything I have ever read in the philosophical and psychological literature – of everything that promotes happiness and well-being.Little lending-libraries notwithstanding, I’m removing the pages from this volume to place in the recycling bin to be pulped into something, I hope, less ideologically toxic than this superficial drivel.Don’t be shy about your accomplishments, but anyone impressed by Klaus’s prescriptions in this volume is not someone you want in your life.Just avoid. I have been declined from 2 past jobs I applied for.. I could always get past the phone screen to the interview but bombed everytime. My resume was great and I knew I could do the position but I never got past the interview. The last interviewer was kind enough to explain why someone got the position over me. She told it was like she had to pull info out of me.. that I was not very clear and concise in answering that I sounded like I didn't really want the job. This was not the case I was more nervous and just disliked talking about myself in interviews. She said she had no idea .. she recommended this book. So I bought it and WOW this was me all over.. I finished the entire book during a 2 day business trip. It was an easy read. I came back and applied for 3 positions and applied the methods. Wouldn't you know I got 2 of the 3 postions. The one I didn't get was even said by the recruiter that it was very close. 1 of the positions I got was with the manager that recommended the book to me. She said my interview this time went worlds better and that I answered everything clear and concise. Thank You these methods Work!
